Buccal massage after Botox or fillers: is it possible?

Written by Yasmin · 3 min read

Buccal massage after Botox or fillers is often possible, but not straight after your injections. The advice is to wait several weeks and to check first with the doctor or nurse who treated you, as they know which product was used and where. Always mention at your appointment whether and when you've had injectables.

I get asked this a lot. And I completely understand why. You've invested in something, and you don't want a massage to change it.

Can I have buccal massage if I've had Botox or fillers?

I work without injectables myself. I don't add anything, I only use my hands. But many people who come to me have had something done at some point. That's absolutely fine. No judgement. I just want the treatment to be safe and comfortable.

That's why I ask every new client about injectables. What did you have done, where on your face, and when? Based on that, we look together at what's possible.

In many cases a treatment works well, as long as there's enough time between the injections and the massage. Sometimes I leave a particular area alone or work there extra lightly. And sometimes the advice is simply: wait a little longer.

How long should you wait after Botox or fillers?

There isn't one number that applies to everyone. It depends on the product, the area and how your body responds. As a guide, think in terms of several weeks, and often longer for fillers than for Botox.

The best person to ask is whoever did your injections. They know exactly what was used and how it behaves. Just ask them: "I'd like a buccal massage, when would that be sensible?" A good practitioner will be happy to help you decide.

Not sure? Then we'd rather wait a bit longer. Your face isn't going anywhere.

Why is caution important?

With buccal massage I work deeply on the muscles and connective tissue of your face, including from inside the cheek. That's a very different kind of touch from applying your moisturiser.

After injections, the tissue needs time to recover and the product needs time to settle. That's why many injectors advise against firm massage on the treated area during that period. I respect that advice.

Later on I keep it in mind too. If I know where filler sits, I adapt my pressure and techniques there.

Can buccal massage be an alternative to Botox?

Another question I hear often. Honest answer: it's something different. Botox temporarily relaxes a muscle by weakening it. Massage doesn't do that. What massage can do is help release tension, support circulation and lymphatic flow, and give your face a fresher, more relaxed look. Many people choose it precisely because they want something natural, without adding anything.

Your face doesn't always need more. Sometimes it mostly needs space.
